They were trying, Rogue thought, getting up from the stump she was sitting on. Remy with his reassuring words and Logan with his stony stoicism. It had helped, feeling herself swaying tipsily from softness on one side of her to solidity on the other. The Besson's had helped too, if only because the ache in her head distracted her from the thoughts it was filled with.
It was fitting that it all felt so funereal, but there came a point when Rogue needed more than the campfire to beat back the darkness she felt draping over her.

Maybe it was unfair, needing her to live up to her name, to be all rainbows and fireworks and bubblegum pops, to come to her looking for amusement, something easy and sugary and giggly, when maybe tonight she wanted to be desolation instead of jubilation.
But Jubilee opened her door when Rogue knocked. They talked shit about the boys and laughed, louder than was natural, laughing into the silence that would have swallowed them, laughing into each other's mouths, then awkwardly asking "Is this ok?," savoring the chance to consent rather than having to endure what they'd never asked for.

"Have fun?" Remy asked when she padded into their room later, half her outfit bundled in her arms. He was lying in their borrowed bed, dark eyes beer-bleary but still glowing in the darkness. There was no judgment in his voice, no jealousy, just sleepy sweetness and a wistful verbal wink of understanding.
"Mhm," she mumbled, undressing again. She yanked the thin sheet over herself, smelt woodsmoke and worried slumber. "Needed that." She tingled at the bristle of stubble on her shoulder, still sensitized. Not raw-nerved, but not numb either. She rolled over to face him. "What do you need?"
